How Do I Take Part?
Your questions answered
What do you need me to do?
Make up a short piece of movement about 30 seconds long, film yourself performing it against a green screen or a plain back ground, then you can send your clip to Al at alorangeartist@gmail.com and she will include it in her film. If your clip is too big to email you can go to a website called https://wetransfer.com where you can upload the file and send it to the same email address.
What kind of movement should I do?
We would like you make up something that expresses how you feel about the moment you said ‘no’ to something that was oppressing you or holding you back, and the power that gave you to alter your future. It could be ending a relationship, leaving a bad job, giving up a bad habit, standing up to a bully, coming out, taking a stand against racism or anything that is personal to you. At the end we will ask you to do a very simple piece of movement the same as everyone else so that we can have a scene where everyone is in unison. You can see that piece of movement on the Final Dance page of this website.
Will there be music?
Yes, if you go to the music page on this website you can play or download the track.
I’m not a dancer, can I still take part?
Yes, absolutely. We are looking to represent you and your personal feelings, not to have some polished piece of dance. Your clip will be mixed in with lots of other people, and as long as you are happy with your clip, we will be happy. If you have mobility issues you can even film something sitting down and use your arms and face to make the movement. If you would like to take part, but don’t want to show your face, you can send us a clip without your face showing, or let us know and we can obscure your face in the film.
How will my image be used. Where will it be shared?
The film will be about ten minutes long, and it will have its first showing during a festival run by theatre company Tangled Feet celebrating the opening of the Hat Works in Luton. It will be shown in a room at the venue where it will be projected in on three walls in a special video space. It will also be shown at an outside venue such as a shop window or projected onto the side of a building with open access to the public. It is then our intention to represent the people of Luton, by showing the film at other arts festivals, both across the UK and internationally. Clips will be used on the internet in for publicity purposes. If you send us a clip, just write a sentence saying you are happy for Al Orange and Tangled Feet to use your image. If you are under 16, we would love to have you take part, but we will need permission from your parents too.
How many people do you need for this project? Can my child / aunt / grandad take part too?
We would like to have as many people as possible, and it is important to us that we include as many different types of people as we can to show a true picture of Luton today, and all of the wonderful people that live there. So yes, tell your friends and family, we would love to have them involved.
I don’t have a green screen or a video camera. Can I still take part?
Yes you can. As long as you film yourself against as plain a background as you can. A plain painted wall or a non-patterned curtain would do. You can film it on a phone, but please turn the phone on its side when you film, so the film is in landscape and NOT upright with the film in portrait. We will be setting up a session with a camera and a green screen, and someone to help you work out the movement so if you would prefer to do that, let us know and we’ll tell you when and where it is happening.
What do I need to wear when I film my video?
This film is about you, so wear whatever you feel most comfortable in. One thing to watch is don’t wear something that is the same colour as your background otherwise you will disappear when we put the background in. If you’re in front of a green screen, don’t wear green. If you’re in front of a white wall, don’t wear white or very pale colours.
When do you need me to send my video clip in by?
As soon as you can is always great, as that gives us more time to work with your image, but we will definitely need them by Monday 5th of July in order to have the film ready for the festival.
How will I be credited in the video?
The names of all participants will be credited at the end of the film, and we will send everyone who took part a link to a private full length online copy of the video so you can show it to your friends and family if you don’t get the chance to see it live at the festival. If you don’t feel comfortable sharing your real name publicly we will be happy to credit you under the stage name of your choice.
